There are much better ways to achieving great grades and high marks than camping out at the library until the librarians throw you out. Staying up the night before and cramming for 24 hours before the test isn’t always the best idea either, although admittedly it does make you feel a little bit better; after all you’ve given it your best shot didn’t you? Well with a few tips, and a great plan, anyone can be a Hermione when it comes to studying.

1/ Have a plan of what you need to do. Your teachers usually take the time to give you a syllabus for the class. Use this to create a study plan. As a simple guide, you should account for 2-3 hours of studying for every credit hour of coursework. So if you have enrolled in a 3 credit hour course, youshould plan on studying 6-9 hours outside of the classroom. Use a weekly template that breaks down your hours and slot in your classes, work and then fill around your study time. Although you might not follow this plan faithfully, at least you should have peace of mind that you have prepared.

2/ Get rid of all your distractions. Most of us could graduate with a Masters of Procrastination. So get rid of them. Get your chores done before you sit down to do your work. Do housecleaning on a designated day of the week. Wash the dishes before you open the books. Its recommended that you don’t even keep your phone in your study space, but if you can’t use the Do Not Disturb function. To get really savvy about limiting your distractions, use the tabs on your web browser and have all the tabs open that you will need, and only use those tabs. This should help prevent falling down the rabbit hole that is social media, using up all of your study time.

3/ Get some exercise! Do a light workout at the gym to get your blood moving and wake up some endorphins in your brain. Better yet, do some yoga. Recent studies from the University of Illinois say that doing yoga for 20 minutes before starting a study session can help the brain processinformation faster, with more accuracy and retain that information longer.

4/ Get into a study routine. Sometimes, by acting habitually, you can signal the brain that it’s time to do a task. When you sit down in a study space, lay out your books, arrange your stationery, and you can even make a study playlist for you to listen to. You don’t always have to study in the same spot, and some studies have shown that choosing new locations to study in can actually increase our capabilities to form strong memories. The brain learns to form new associations with old material to help you recall it better.


5/ Don’t study for too long. Acceptable sessions are around 40-50 minutes with a 10 minute break in between. The brain doesn’t like to work at high levels of concentration for too long, and studying without a break can actually be detrimental. It can make it harder to recall what you studied in the middle of a long session and you may end up only remembering what you started with and ended with. So get up! Take a short walk or have a mini yoga session. Treat yourself with a drink or snack before you sit back down. Whatever you do though, try and stay away from anything to distracting before you get back to the books!


6/ Find your study style. Some people can just pick up a book and become an expert on the subject by the end. Some people need to see something before the get they hang of it. Others have to learn the process by doing it themselves. Others still prefer hearing the material out loud. So find the

best process for you. If you are an auditory learner, read your notes out loud, or record them as a play list to listen to. If you are a visual learner, perhaps colour coding your notes or drawing diagrams and flow charts could help you memorise better. If you learn better by role playing, get a study partner to help you.


7/ Find a good study and life balance. You’ll learn and study much better if you are getting plenty of rest and eating well. If you can reduce the stress around managing your study time, you’ll be more apt to spend time doing it rather than procrastinating. With the right routine, studying will just come naturally.
